Obituary of Anna Marshall
Long time Marshfield resident Anna Maude Marshall, former Springfield School Science Coordinator and founder of Teaching Science over the Education Channel, passed away in Claremont, California, at the age of 88. She and her husband George Winston Marshall lived in Springfield from 1962 until 1985 when they built their retirement home on an 11-acre farm in Marshfield. They enjoyed 24 years at the farm until moving to Banning, California in 1996 where they resided until her husband passed in 1998. Anna then moved to Claremont, residing at Claremont Manor Residential Community.
Mrs. Marshall was born Anna Maude Kennett, in Hornersville Mo. on Nov. 16, 1922. She graduated Hornersville High School in 1940. She attended Southeast Missouri State College in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. in 1942, and continued at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, Arkansas. She married George Winston Marshall, of Holcomb, Missouri on November 25, 1948. She received a B.S. Honors Degree in Education from University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg in 1961 and her Masters from Webster University, St. Louis in 1967.
She began her teaching career at Oakhaven Elementary School in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1961. Working in the Springfield, Missouri, School Science Department, she authored and developed Discovery With Blocks, an Elementary science program; while at Webster College the program was sold to the EML Company in Austin, Texas in December of 1967. In the summer of 1969, she was awarded an NSTA academic grant to attend the Science Supervisors Seminar at the University of Colorado in Boulder and received the Missouri Science Educators Award in 1984, before retiring in 1985.
Mrs. Marshall, Ann to her friends, was a member of Kappa Delta Phi, Eastern Star, active as an adult in the Girl Scouts and a long-term member of P.E.O.
At Claremont Manor, Ann was an active participant in community activities. She was chairwoman of the Educational Committee, a member of the Spiritual Life Committee and served on various other committees. At Claremont, she began writing, authoring two books about her family, about each of her grandchildren and numerous poems.
Daughter Pamela Marshall Sinco of Rancho Mirage, California, and son George W. Marshall, Jr. of Houston, Texas, survive her. She has 3 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death in March of 2011 by Mildred Karlovec in Pomona, California, aged 95 and sister to her husband Winston; sister Tommy Lee Burch of St Louis, Missouri, in 2010; brother Charles P. Kennett in 1986 of Hornersville, Missouri, and a brother Earl W. Kennett of Memphis, Tennessee, in 1987.
A graveside service will be in Banning, California at the San Gorgonio Cemetery, at 10:00A.M., Friday, October 28 where Anna will be laid to rest beside her late husband George Winston Marshall.
