Obituary of Joseph Eugene Brummell, Sr.

Born November 22, 1934 in Salina, Kansas to Josephine Elizee and William C. Brummell, Sr.

 Moved to Louisville, KY. in 1942 to live with his father and Artemesia Brummell, but continued to spend summers in Salina until age 13.

 He received a Ford Foundation scholarship to enter Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA. in September 1951 at the age of 16 after completing his junior year at Central High School in Louisville Ky. He was awarded his high school diploma upon completion of his freshman year. Graduated from Morehouse College in June 1955 with a B.A. degree in Business Finance and Mathematics. He also received his MBA in 1971 from Pepperdine University.

After graduation he moved to Los Angeles, CA. in June 1956, and began a career in the banking industry. In September 1957 he was called to military service, and spent two years serving in a military police unit at Fort Gordon, GA attaining the rank of Specialist First Class. Upon receiving his honorable discharge in 1959 returned to Los Angeles to resume his banking career. After six years holding various positions in the banking industry started a new career in the aerospace industry with two major companies Rockwell and TRW. Over the next 28 years he held various supervisory and management positions in both the classified and open administrative departments. After serving in the private sector he moved into the public sector for an additional six years retiring in 1998 as the Finance/Budget Manager for the Los Angeles Housing Agency.

 He became a member of Olivet Lutheran Church in 1978, and served in various capacities including Deacon, Treasurer, Vice President and President. It was through his tireless efforts that many of the difficult situations facing Olivet were brought to a successful conclusion. He felt that many of his best times at Olivet was being involved in bible study groups. In 2002, he joined Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. He was active in the choir, men’s Bible study, Church Council and various programs.

 One of his special joys was serving as the trip coordinator for his church families throughout the Southern California area. He took great pride to ensure that everyone had a great time, and his breakfast buffets prior to starting each trip were very special.

 He will be profoundly missed by his wife, Verlette Brummell; daughters Audrey Fisher, La Sonya Pitts, and Simone Brummell; sons, Joseph Brummell, Jr. and Alexander Brummell; six grandchildren, Jannaee Moore, Jonathan Fisher, Brandon Fisher, Kimberly Brummell, Joseph Brummell III, and Azjennae Frazier; six great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Jeanette Brummell; daughter-in-law Jerrilyn Hardy-Brummell; two sons-in-law, Anthony Fisher and Glen Pitts; niece Alea Riley; nephew William Brummell III; daughters-in-love Angela Harrison, Tamara Corley, Jennifer Warren-Smith, and Karen Powers; Michael Gilbeaux, Geoffrey Gilbeaux, other loving in laws, and many dear friends.

Make yourself familiar with the angels,

And behold them frequently in spirit;

For without being seen,

They are present with you
