Obituary of Suzanne Coombs Norman

Suzanne Coombs Norman was born on July 15, 1938 to Richard J. Coombs Sr. and Ramona Shelley Coombs, in Redlands, California and was raised in Banning. Sue returned home to her Heavenly Father on July 23, 2016 at 8:20 p.m. at San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital. Sue is survived by her daughters, Lori Phillips and Jami Norman. Her son-in-law Karl Phillips, Lori’s kids John, Marlo, Alyssa and Kaiya and Jami’s daughter Patricia Powell. She is also survived by her baby brother Richard Coombs Jr and his family, Susan, Jim, John, Mary Jane (Chris, Maggie and Gillian). Sue is also survived by many other family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Jimmie; her parents Dick and Mona Coombs and her step mom Betty Coombs. Sue graduated from Banning High School in 1956. She received her Bachelor’s Degree from Brigham Young University and received her Master’s Degree from University of Arizona. She used her education to return to Banning and taught at both the high school and Susan B. Coombs Jr High School for 38 years. During her tenure she taught Physical Education, History and English. She coached multiple teams including softball, volleyball, swimming, and cheerleading. She helped bring girls athletics (traveling/inter-scholastic) to BHS. She retired in June 2001. Sue was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Sue was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Retired Teachers Association and Banning Teacher’s Association. The last few years of Sue’s life she had Alzheimer’s and fought a good fight, she was blessed with caregivers who allowed her to stay home, we thank them for helping mom during her fight. As a family we are sad to see her gone, but at the same time we know that dad, grandma, grandpa, and nana were waiting to welcome her back home and to remind her of all the forgotten memories. We are grateful for Eternal Families and the opportunity we have to be together again someday.
