Obituary of Alsie Smith

79, passed away at home, with her family by her side on Sept. 29, 2011. Ms. Smith was born in Birmingham, Alabama to her parents Jessie and Ada Sykes. Education was very important to Alsie, after graduating from her High School as valedictorian in 1950; she went on to receive a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education in 1954. Alsie went on to worked for the City of Los Angeles Board of Education, the Los Angeles Unified School District, and for 29 years as a Business Education and Business Law Teacher and the Student Job Coordinator at David Starr Jordan High School. Alsie was a member of the Beaumont Women's Club, and long time active member and Deaconess of First Missionary Baptist Church of Banning. Alsie is survived by her daughters, Freda A. Warren of Savannah, GA, and Thais D. May of Moreno Valley, CA; brother, Thomas J. (Catherine) Sykes of Washington D.C.; a host of brother and sister-in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, as well as, her dear friend and caregiver, Geri Griggs. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jessie and Ada Sykes; husband, Leo L. Smith; sister, Louisiana A. Geter; brother, Willie J. Sykes.
