Back when the lab was located as the base of Mt. Rubidoux, Steve was a machinist under Mike Huber, and I worked for Mike also as a groundskeeper and maintenance mechanic. Steve was great to work with. We had SO much fun together. We would race these little maintenance putt-putt cars when Hubie (Mike Huber, the boss) wasn't looking. Everyone in the shop called each other "Hinck" because this was around the time Hinckely shot Reagan. Every morning, it was "Good Morning, Hinck." So when someone called "Hey Hinck," everybody turned around. It was hilarious. He also helped me right a forklift that I had tipped over, before Hubie had a chance to catch me and chew me out. It was so fun do things to get Hubie excited. For example, Hubie would clear off a workbench in preparation for something he was going to do the next day, and leave big notes on the workbench "DO NOT PLACE ANYTHING HERE." After Hubie would leave, Steve would get the forklift and he and I would gather all kinds of junk and put it on a pallet, then put the pallet on the workbench with the forklift. Steve was SO playful. Hubie would have a fit the next day, but it was all in fun. Steve and I would take the stuff off the workbench and say we hadn't seen the notes not to leave anything there!!! I have so many good memories of Steve. REO Speedwagon was playing constantly on the radio. I learned some good machining practices from Steve. He was a great guy.
