Obituary of William Hyland

William Henry Hyland, age 87, of Banning, formerly of San Marino, passed away Friday, September 2, 2011. He was born July 30, 1924, in Los Angeles. He served in the United States Army during World War II and was awarded the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, the blue Combat Infantry Badge (of which he was most proud), and three major battle stars. After returning from the war, Bill married Helene Hunter and attended UC Berkeley where he received his BS in Engineering. They then moved to Southern California where he worked as a Senior Executive for several large rock and gravel companies. In addition, he was a college teacher and an elementary school mentor. Bill was a proud Rotarian for over 25 years and assisted with various service projects and youth programs including RYLA and academic scholarships. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Helene, two daughters, Jennifer Howe of Michigan and M'Lissa Snead of Tennessee, two grandsons, William Brown and Matthew Huwiler, and two great grandsons, Benjamin Huwiler and Cooper Brown. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Pearl Hyland. The family would like to express their thanks to the special caregivers in the Alzheimer's Unit of Sunwest Village in Hemet for taking such loving care of Bill these last few years. A celebration of Bill's life will be announced in the future by Wiefels & Son Mortuary of Banning.
